DIY Door Desk

My husband, Andrew, works from home a lot and likes a large desk to spread out on. So instead of using a small desk I had from high school, he would use our dinning room table as his work station. After a couple days of this we decided we needed a longer desk. We got to work searching for a unique desk, but were quickly disappointed by the high cost. One day while Andrew was putting things away in our garage he noticed an old door up in the rafters. He pulled it down and thought we could make a cool desk out of it, so that’s exactly what we did!

DIY Door Desk
DIY Door DeskWe got out some aggression and distressed both sides of the desk with a hammer.

DIY Door Desk Then stained the desk with Black Cherry Wood Stain, which after several coats turned to this awesome dark purple over the white undertone of the door. (If the door was unfinished wood, it would have been a dark cherry brown.) After staining to the desired color, we used Polyurethan to protect the wood from stains or scratches and to add a nice glossy shine. Gently wipe the varnish with steel wool.  Then we waxed the desk with Howard Wood Polish with a soft cloth to smooth, finish and further protect the desk.

DIY Door Desk Next we placed the desk top on these Ikea Trestle Table Legs that are only $10 each.

DIY Door Desk We hired a local glass company to create a glass top for the desk, which cost us $130. In all the whole desk cost us about $150 because we already had the door, stain, varnish and wax. Now we have an awesome unique desk with tons of character.

Banana Pancakes

Banana Pancakes

Banana Pancakes
Ingredients:
1 cup Whole Wheat White Flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 egg lightly beaten
1 banana sliced for garnish
2 tbsp apple sauce/vegetable oil
1 tbsp honey
1 cup milk
2 bananas, mashed
1 banana sliced (optional)
1/4 cup walnuts (optional)
1/4 cup chocolate chips (optional)
butter
maple syrup

If you want sliced bananas as a garnish, saute with butter over medium heat until lightly browned and set aside. Mix flour, baking powder and cinnamon in a medium bowl. In a separate large bowl mix apple sauce, honey, milk and mushed bananas. Slowly incorporate flour into banana bowl until combined, don’t over mix.

Coat a large saute pan with butter over medium heat and add about 1/4 cup of batter for each pancake. If you want to add nuts or chocolate chips add when there are a couple bubbles on top. They are ready to flip when there are little holes throughout the top side of the pancake and the under side is golden brown. Flip and cook opposite side till golden brown. Stack pancakes and top with butter, bananas, and more nuts, chocolate chips if you wish and of course, maple syrup!Makes about 12 pancakes, Enjoy!

Caramel Macchiato at Home

Caramel Macchiato at Home

One morning I was craving Starbucks’ Caramel Macchiato, but didn’t want to get out of my pjs so I decided to create one from the comfort of my own home.

Caramel Macchiato at Home
Ingredients:
1-2 tsp vanilla syrup (recipe below)
1 cup of milk (whatever milk you typically drink)
1/4 cup strong coffee/espresso
1 tsp caramel sauce (any store bought caramel or I made this Caramel Bourbon Vanilla Sauce over the holidays and it was delicious in this recipe)

Directions:
Place milk in a small sauce pan over low heat. Once the milk is heated through a little, use this nifty Aerolatte Milk Frother (or intensely whisk) to create velvety foam.  Grab your favorite coffee mug and pour vanilla syrup inside.  Pour frothed milk (with foam) over syrup.  Pour coffee over foam (that’s how Starbucks does it) and top with caramel and enjoy!  Serves 1 or you can multiple the recipe if you have guests.

Vanilla Syrup
Ingredients:
1/8 cup of sugar
1/8 cup of brown sugar
1/4 water
1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Directions:
Place all ingredients in a small sauce pan over over medium low heat. Cook for 5 minutes until sugar is dissolved and syrupy.

Filet Mignon with Balsamic Syrup and Goat Cheese

Filet Mignon with Balsamic Syrup and Goat CheeseThe other night my husband surprised me with this fantastic dinner. He made Giada De Laurentiis’ Filet Mignon with Balsamic Syrup and Goat Cheese. Balsamic and goat cheese are two of my absolute favorite flavors. I was a little skeptical about the flavor combination with steak, but let me tell you… It was phenomenal! I think I’ll be requesting that Andrew makes this recipe often! Because it’s only natural he served the steak with a baked potato and topped with butter, nonfat Greek yogurt (sound weird? trust me, it tastes just like sour cream on a potato & is so much better for you!), cheddar cheese & chives. He also sauteed brussel sprouts in olive oil and garlic.  This meal was incredibly delicious. He sure knows how to spoil me!
